Surgical Scrubs Vs Medical Scrubs - Are They Different?

Although both terms, surgical scrubs and medical scrubs, may be used simultaneously to describe the same type of uniform worn by healthcare practitioners there is a difference. I have spent the past three decades wearing surgical scrubs as a surgical assistant as well as observing other healthcare personnel wearing medical scrubs. I now provide both surgical scrubs and medical scrubs as a retailer and began to notice the differences. The differences are primarily in terms of functionality, design and style. I will attempt to describe these differences.

First, in terms of functionality, the surgical scrub is designed for wear in the operating room or other surgical facility. In the surgical facility the patient remains stationary and the care givers must adapt in order to provide care. While providing care for these patients the care givers must have unrestricted movements. This requires bending, twisting, stretching, and contorting the body to reach the appropriate areas of the patient to provide care. Other duties require moving equipment running power cords that require pushing, pulling and even kneeling. These people are always on the move and rarely stationary. Because of these movements is it necessary to wear loose fitting and unrestrictive clothing. In contrast care givers that wear medical scrubs are usually providing care to patients that can move to accommodate the care giver's needs or they are sitting at a desk doing administrative duties. These people are not required to move their bodies as extreme as the surgical care givers. Therefore they are able to wear more restrictive clothing such as medical scrubs.

The design of surgical scrubs and medical scrubs are drastically different. Both are designed to accommodate the functionality of the uniform. Surgical Scrubs are usually a square cut top with a loose fitting v-neck design with simple patch pockets. The bottoms are straight leg. The waist is either a drawstring, elastic or a combination of both. The Drawstring is by far the most common. The pants usually have a single patch pocket. In contrast, medical scrubs are available in many designs. Most are designed with flares and curves to contour to the body. Tops are available in several neck line designs including rounded and wrap around. Pockets are usually flashy designs and shapes. Medical scrubs pants are designed with flare legs and curvature in the hip area. The pants always come with an elastic waist bands and are designed to be worn either high on the waist or low on the hips. Medical scrubs design limits the freedom of movement without confinements of the uniform.

The differences in styles between surgical scrubs and medical are the most drastic. Putting it simple surgical scrubs have no style. They are always a unisex style so they can be worn by both female and male care givers. Surgical scrubs are also always a solid color. The non-style of the surgical scrub enables the surgical care giver to perform at an optimal level without any restrictions from the uniforms. As far as medical scrubs the style is unlimited and vast. They are available in many colors, prints and styles. Medical scrubs are styled for the female and male separately. These styles are designed to fit the body as most other street clothes will and has appealing look. Medical scrubs styles compromises functionality for fashion appeal. The difference can be related to a sweatshirt and sweatpants (surgical scrubs) and a business suit.

Both terms are use interchangeable in everyday life. There are also many other terms that describe these uniforms such as hospital scrubs, doctor scrubs, and nursing scrubs to name a few. Regardless of the term used the important aspect of buying and wearing scrubs is to select the correct functionality, design and style that meet the needs of the care giver's duties. This is indeed much more important than the term.

Branding Operation - New York Times

So you’re about to have surgery. You’re probably nervous. But the medical staff seems calm and competent, and that’s reassuring, because you’re counting on them to make pretty serious decisions. You glance over at a nurse, and you notice the tag on her scrubs. “Grey’s Anatomy,” it says.

Whether you’re a fan of ABC’s hit hospital drama or not, you might find this . . . notable. A reader who had precisely this experience dropped me a line about it not long ago. “I asked her about it, and she said they were the most comfortable scrubs and very popular,” he wrote. “How odd is it that a profession that asks people to trust its members to take life-or-death actions would advertise a brand based on a TV show on the job?”

I would say: pretty odd. Even if you enjoy following the private tribulations and messy love lives of an imaginary hospital staff during prime time, you would probably prefer to see the people delivering your care as laser-focused pros leading a personal-distraction-free existence. But it turns out that “Grey’s Anatomy” scrubs have been popular with medical professionals pretty much from the moment they were first produced, in 2006. The collection won its maker, Barco Uniforms, the “best new line of the year” award from the Uniform Retailers Association, which I hadn’t heard of but which sounds impressive enough. The branded line has been a top seller for Barco, according to Kyle Weiner, executive vice president and chief operating officer for the company, who not surprisingly didn’t see anything odd about the situation the reader encountered. Barco, he informed me, has long been a leader and innovator in “the medical--scrub world.” The company says it is pushing “advanced research clothing technology” — arcTechnology — “applying various properties to fabrics at the fiber level, for outstanding, extended performance.”

And maybe more to the point, Weiner added, the company has a long relationship with the entertainment world, supplying scrubs used in a variety of movies and television shows at least since the 1960s. Barco, founded in 1929, also makes uniforms for Taco Bell and McDonald’s and claims to have created “the world’s first fashion scrubs” in 1965. Weiner says the idea of reversing that flow — from a uniform maker providing realistic scrubs to fictional worlds, to connoting a fictional world on real medical wear — came from Barco’s chief executive, Michael Donner, when “Grey’s Anatomy” was still in the concept stage. It’s a matter of luck that the show, now in its seventh season, turned out to be a hit.

Scrubs are a far less standard category of garment than might be assumed. Aside from the color you might think of as “scrubs green,” a huge variety of hues and patterns are offered by competing scrubs makers like Cherokee, Koi, Urbane and Peaches. You can also buy scrubs emblazoned with your college logo or a variety of Disney characters. Barco itself has multiple lines, including Crayola Threads, which, like the “Grey’s Anatomy” products, is a result of a licensing arrangement. You can also find medical garb that’s part of the Katherine Heigl Collection — she’s a former “Grey’s Anatomy” actress — but this line, now discontinued, was not manufactured by Barco. O, The Oprah Magazine recently gave a shout-out to the “sleek, chic duds” of Blue Sky Scrubs, a Texas company that offers earrings in addition to uniforms and boldly patterned scrub hats.

While scrubs with bright patterns, or even Mickey Mouse, make imminent sense in the context of a pediatrics ward, a TV-show-branded medical uniform seems different to me. When I asked a doctor friend of mine what she thought, she clearly considered the question itself odd: quality of medical care has nothing to do with the little tags on the professionals’ uniforms; the more insidious form of branding in hospitals are the freebies from drug-company sales reps. Fair enough. On the other hand, comments on the Consumed Facebook page, when I floated that reader’s story, represented a different view. “I’d prefer my fantasy/reality to not collide when in the hospital,” one said.

The disconnect here is that the consumer isn’t the patient; it’s the person wearing the scrubs. Like anybody else who wears a de facto uniform, that person wants to be comfortable, look good and perhaps, within the confines of dress-code strictures, express some personality. That’s why at least some medical professionals apparently seek out “Grey’s Anatomy” garb in specialty-uniform stores: a garment referencing a medical--focused hit from pop culture might be clever or amusing enough to catch the attention of colleagues, and that’s the idea — not to distract or disconcert the occasional sharp-eyed patient. For most patients, the branding is probably too small and subtle to notice, and I suppose if it made my caregivers happy, I would be fine with anything that put them in a good mood. But if this catches on and medical uniforms routinely reference medical-themed entertainments, let’s just agree on this: no “Nurse Jackie” scrubs, O.K.?

How to Choose Stylish Scrubs

Scrubs used to be strictly for surgeons and medical personnel. Because scrubs are so durable and comfortable, dental and veterinary staff started to wear them, too. The easy care nature of scrubs made them ideal for prison employees who also wear them. Now scrubs are a fashion statement across the country with everyone from college students to businessmen to grandmothers wearing them.

Scrubs have a carefree design to accommodate the split second demands of a medical professional. This easy wear quality makes them popular for personal wear, too. Students use scrubs as leisure wear while they study or lounge around the dorm. Men and women slip into scrubs as pajamas and street wear. Campers pack a set of lightweight scrubs as a convenient change of clothes. Scrubs are easy to transport, quick to put on and made in all sizes so their popularity continues to soar.

A basic set of scrubs includes a pair of pull-on pants and a v-neck, short sleeved shirt. Some scrubs have waist-length warm-up print scrub jackets with no lapels, long sleeves and stockinette cuffs. Scrub pants have either an elastic waist or a drawstring waist so they can be slipped on in seconds. This design makes them perfect for both emergency rooms and everyday leisure wear. Often hospital and medical personnel are assigned uniform scrubs. They might bear the embroidered name of the medical facility so they always remain on the premises. Typically these are surgical scrubs made for sterile medical purposes. Similar non-surgical scrubs are worn everywhere from dental offices to veterinary offices to around town.

How Do You Find The Right Size Scrubs? Pick up a scrub catalog or visit an online resource to find out the standard measurements used for scrub sizes. Hospital personnel come in all sizes and shapes so there are plus size scrub uniforms, tall sizes and petites. Measure your chest, waist and hips at their widest sections to determine the proper size scrubs. You can also compare your current clothes size to the scrubs sizing charts to figure out which sizes would fit best. For petite and tall sizes, measure your leg from below the hip to the ankle to find out the proper length for scrub pants.

What Style Scrubs Are Available? Leading scrubs brands such as Cherokee, Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy, Landau and Urbane make all different types of scrubs in a rainbow of colors and designs. Show off your alma mater with college scrubs. Let everyone know your favorite team with sports scrubs. NASCAR scrubs show off the racer in you. Scrubs are available in colors ranging from blue to pink to yellow. Fashionable print scrub tops have square necks and cinched waists. Patterned scrubs include cartoon characters and holiday embellishments. From stylish to whimsical, there are scrub designs for everyone.

Avoid Being a Scrub by Wearing Cheap Landau Scrubs

Words are wonderful. We can add and subtract pieces from them, move them around in a sentence, and create entire books from them. One of the most fascinating aspects of words is the multiple meanings that they can have. For instance, consider the word "run." It can mean moving faster than walking, competing in a race, extending in a certain direction, installing a wire in a certain place, moving something through something else, using a machine to process something, participating as a candidate in an election, and so on.

SCRUB: DOING, BEING, AND WEARING

Another interesting word is "scrub." Typically, we first think of this word as a verb. We scrub dirt from a piece of material, we scrub flooring to make it sparkling clean, etc. However, a scrub can also be a small person, a mongrel, a short tree or shrub, or an athletic player who is not on a team's starting lineup.

In addition to being a scrub and doing a scrub, we can also wear a scrub. Besides being a person, animal, or tree, a scrub can also exist as clothing. Typically, surgeons, nurses, and other workers in an operating room, wear scrubs such as cheap landau scrubs. The term "scrubs" refers to surgery personnel that "scrubs in" during a surgery.

WEARING SCRUBS WITHOUT "SCRUBBING IN"

Interestingly, the use of scrubs in hospitals has expanded beyond surgery rooms. In fact, hospital personnel often wear scrubs in any environment that is clean as a bean. Some employees of dental and doctor's offices also wear scrubs.

Various personal not related to the medical field, wear scrubs. Certain prisons throughout the United States require their inmates to wear scrubs, as their prison uniform. Such attire is much more comfortable and hygienic than the old-fashioned horizontal uniforms featured in period movies. Other scrub-wearers can include unit clerks and custodians.

NOT ALL SCRUBS ARE THE SAME

What can we classify as "scrubs"? In the medical world, scrubs typically include the combination of uniform short-sleeve shirts and pants, which medical personnel wear. However, scrubs can also include other attire as well. That includes a long-sleeved jacket that is waist-length, with stockinette cuffs. Medical personnel refer to this article of clothing as a "warm-up jacket." However, regardless of its classification, virtually all American and Canadian patient care employees wear a type of scrubs, when they are on duty.

A NORTH AMERICAN TRADITION

While scrubs are particularly popular in North America, their use is not universal. For example, outside of the United States and Canada, scrubs are less common. Doctors often wear everyday clothes and a white doctor's coat, except when they perform surgery. Also, the uniforms of midwives and nurses in Europe typically include a dress, or a tunic and trousers.

While the word "scrubs" has numerous meanings, its function as a form of attire is particularly interesting. Scrubs are comfortable, sanitary, and versatile. Make sure to put quality scrubs on, regardless of whether your job includes "scrubbing in." Avoid being a scrub, by wearing one!

Riding the Wave

Riding the WaveThe medically minded Scrubs is an eccentric affair, populated by a zany cast of residents saving lives while learning life's little lessons in the process. Though lacking the show's oddball humor, its soundtrack is undeniably earnest, with a rich understanding of the pleasures and hardships faced by the hospital workers. The show's theme song, Lazlo Bane's quirky banjo twanger, sighs "I'm no Superman," as an uncharacteristically subdued Guided by Voices track cautions to "Hold on Hope." Ex-Men at Work frontman Colin Hay lends his sage advice with acoustic renditions of "Beautiful World" and the chestnut "Overkill," while Eels' "Fresh Feeling" begins with a tuning orchestra and turns into a tripping beatfest. The highlights, though, belong to Francis Dunnery, sounding uncannily like Peter Gabriel on the high-tea string elegance of "Good Life," and the Shins, with "New Slang," a humble campfire song. Puttering along pleasantly, Scrubs, while a little bland, is nevertheless a life-affirming collection that's as hopeful as the aspiring young doctors on the show. --Annie Zaleski
