How to Choose Stylish Scrubs

Scrubs used to be strictly for surgeons and medical personnel. Because scrubs are so durable and comfortable, dental and veterinary staff started to wear them, too. The easy care nature of scrubs made them ideal for prison employees who also wear them. Now scrubs are a fashion statement across the country with everyone from college students to businessmen to grandmothers wearing them.

Scrubs have a carefree design to accommodate the split second demands of a medical professional. This easy wear quality makes them popular for personal wear, too. Students use scrubs as leisure wear while they study or lounge around the dorm. Men and women slip into scrubs as pajamas and street wear. Campers pack a set of lightweight scrubs as a convenient change of clothes. Scrubs are easy to transport, quick to put on and made in all sizes so their popularity continues to soar.

A basic set of scrubs includes a pair of pull-on pants and a v-neck, short sleeved shirt. Some scrubs have waist-length warm-up print scrub jackets with no lapels, long sleeves and stockinette cuffs. Scrub pants have either an elastic waist or a drawstring waist so they can be slipped on in seconds. This design makes them perfect for both emergency rooms and everyday leisure wear. Often hospital and medical personnel are assigned uniform scrubs. They might bear the embroidered name of the medical facility so they always remain on the premises. Typically these are surgical scrubs made for sterile medical purposes. Similar non-surgical scrubs are worn everywhere from dental offices to veterinary offices to around town.

How Do You Find The Right Size Scrubs? Pick up a scrub catalog or visit an online resource to find out the standard measurements used for scrub sizes. Hospital personnel come in all sizes and shapes so there are plus size scrub uniforms, tall sizes and petites. Measure your chest, waist and hips at their widest sections to determine the proper size scrubs. You can also compare your current clothes size to the scrubs sizing charts to figure out which sizes would fit best. For petite and tall sizes, measure your leg from below the hip to the ankle to find out the proper length for scrub pants.

What Style Scrubs Are Available? Leading scrubs brands such as Cherokee, Katherine Heigl, Grey's Anatomy, Landau and Urbane make all different types of scrubs in a rainbow of colors and designs. Show off your alma mater with college scrubs. Let everyone know your favorite team with sports scrubs. NASCAR scrubs show off the racer in you. Scrubs are available in colors ranging from blue to pink to yellow. Fashionable print scrub tops have square necks and cinched waists. Patterned scrubs include cartoon characters and holiday embellishments. From stylish to whimsical, there are scrub designs for everyone.

Avoid Being a Scrub by Wearing Cheap Landau Scrubs

Words are wonderful. We can add and subtract pieces from them, move them around in a sentence, and create entire books from them. One of the most fascinating aspects of words is the multiple meanings that they can have. For instance, consider the word "run." It can mean moving faster than walking, competing in a race, extending in a certain direction, installing a wire in a certain place, moving something through something else, using a machine to process something, participating as a candidate in an election, and so on.

SCRUB: DOING, BEING, AND WEARING

Another interesting word is "scrub." Typically, we first think of this word as a verb. We scrub dirt from a piece of material, we scrub flooring to make it sparkling clean, etc. However, a scrub can also be a small person, a mongrel, a short tree or shrub, or an athletic player who is not on a team's starting lineup.

In addition to being a scrub and doing a scrub, we can also wear a scrub. Besides being a person, animal, or tree, a scrub can also exist as clothing. Typically, surgeons, nurses, and other workers in an operating room, wear scrubs such as cheap landau scrubs. The term "scrubs" refers to surgery personnel that "scrubs in" during a surgery.

WEARING SCRUBS WITHOUT "SCRUBBING IN"

Interestingly, the use of scrubs in hospitals has expanded beyond surgery rooms. In fact, hospital personnel often wear scrubs in any environment that is clean as a bean. Some employees of dental and doctor's offices also wear scrubs.

Various personal not related to the medical field, wear scrubs. Certain prisons throughout the United States require their inmates to wear scrubs, as their prison uniform. Such attire is much more comfortable and hygienic than the old-fashioned horizontal uniforms featured in period movies. Other scrub-wearers can include unit clerks and custodians.

NOT ALL SCRUBS ARE THE SAME

What can we classify as "scrubs"? In the medical world, scrubs typically include the combination of uniform short-sleeve shirts and pants, which medical personnel wear. However, scrubs can also include other attire as well. That includes a long-sleeved jacket that is waist-length, with stockinette cuffs. Medical personnel refer to this article of clothing as a "warm-up jacket." However, regardless of its classification, virtually all American and Canadian patient care employees wear a type of scrubs, when they are on duty.

A NORTH AMERICAN TRADITION

While scrubs are particularly popular in North America, their use is not universal. For example, outside of the United States and Canada, scrubs are less common. Doctors often wear everyday clothes and a white doctor's coat, except when they perform surgery. Also, the uniforms of midwives and nurses in Europe typically include a dress, or a tunic and trousers.

While the word "scrubs" has numerous meanings, its function as a form of attire is particularly interesting. Scrubs are comfortable, sanitary, and versatile. Make sure to put quality scrubs on, regardless of whether your job includes "scrubbing in." Avoid being a scrub, by wearing one!

Riding the Wave

Riding the WaveThe medically minded Scrubs is an eccentric affair, populated by a zany cast of residents saving lives while learning life's little lessons in the process. Though lacking the show's oddball humor, its soundtrack is undeniably earnest, with a rich understanding of the pleasures and hardships faced by the hospital workers. The show's theme song, Lazlo Bane's quirky banjo twanger, sighs "I'm no Superman," as an uncharacteristically subdued Guided by Voices track cautions to "Hold on Hope." Ex-Men at Work frontman Colin Hay lends his sage advice with acoustic renditions of "Beautiful World" and the chestnut "Overkill," while Eels' "Fresh Feeling" begins with a tuning orchestra and turns into a tripping beatfest. The highlights, though, belong to Francis Dunnery, sounding uncannily like Peter Gabriel on the high-tea string elegance of "Good Life," and the Shins, with "New Slang," a humble campfire song. Puttering along pleasantly, Scrubs, while a little bland, is nevertheless a life-affirming collection that's as hopeful as the aspiring young doctors on the show. --Annie Zaleski
